Your menu is an integral part of any gathering, whether you're celebrating a traditional holiday or entertaining "just for fun." The following recipe ideas are borrowed from Patty Sachs, author of Pick-A-Party Cookbook (published by Meadowbrook Press), who is graciously allowing us to share these recipes with you.

New Year's Day
A New Year's Day brunch is a great way to kick off the year.

Black-Eyed Peas with Ham (for luck)
Makes: 6 servings

3 1/2 cups black-eyed peas, fresh or frozen, thawed
3 cups chicken stock or canned low-salt broth
4 ounces ham, finely chopped
1 small yellow onion, chopped
2 tablespoons balsamic or red wine vinegar
3 large garlic cloves, minced
1 bay leaf
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme, crumbled
1/4 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper
Salt and pepper, to taste

In a large heavy saucepan, combine all ingredients except salt and pepper; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until peas are tender (about 45 minutes). Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve in small punch-sized cups to all guests as they enter, and explain that black-eyed peas are for luck.
